Case No:6 – 2/20 - 1st Inst. Verdict – Final
Zeynep G. left Germany for Syria in October 2014. In Syria, she married a Chechen ISIS fighter ran their household. In 2015, Zeynep G. sent several text messages to her former employer in Berlin, in an attempt to convince her to also travel to Syria to join ISIS. When Zeynep G.’s husband died in combat in 2015 she quickly married another ISIS fighter who gifted her a weapon for their wedding. Her second husband died in late 2017 and Zeynep G. was captured by Kurdish forces in early 2019. She managed to escape the Kurdish camps and was captured by Turkish forces in Turkey, where she was placed in extradition detention in February 2020 until she was returned to Germany in May 2020 where she was placed in pre-trial detention upon return. Zeynep G. had been charged with the war crime of pillaging as she and her second husband allegedly lived in an apartment that was illegally taken from the rightful Yazidi owners by ISIS. However, the court was not convinced beyond reasonable doubt that the apartment was indeed part of ISIS illegally seized properties or otherwise available on the regular housing market. Zeynep G. was sentenced to 2 years and 20 months on parole and subjected to reporting orders for this period.
