Case: Sohail A. -

Sohail A., a Syrian national, is suspected of having been a member of Liwa Jund al-Rahman between June 2013 and April 2014. This organisation was allegedly founded and headed by Amer A. who is facing charges of war crimes and membership in a terrorist organisation in a separate proceeding. According to German prosecutors, Sohail A. was responsible for the public relations work of the group and headed their media unit. He is said to have created propaganda videos. When ISIS took control of the area around Deir ez-Zor and when Liwa Jund al-Rahman allegedly merged with ISIS, he is said to have joined ISIS as well. According to prosecutors, Sohail A. has also taken up tasks with ISIS' media department. Sohail A. was arrested in Germany in April 2024 and placed in pre-trial detention. On 16 July 2024, German prosecutors charged him with war crimes of displacement and pillaging, as well as membership in a terrorist organisation. He is standing trial since September 2024.
