Case Summary

Osama K., a Swedish national, is suspected of travelling to Syria in 2014 and joining ISIS. He allegedly took part in the execution of a Jordanian pilot, who was burned alive by ISIS in 2015. He has already been convicted for his role in the 2015 Paris attacks, receiving a 30 year imprisonment sentence in June 2022. He is also suspected of being involved in the 2016 Brussels attacks. In June and July 2025, he was standing trial in Sweden for war crimes and terrorist offences. According to Swedish prosecutors, a military aircraft of the Royal Jordanian Air Force went down in Syria on 24 December 2014. On the same day, the pilot was allegedly captured by ISIS near Raqqa, Syria. Osama K. is said to have been involved in the execution of the pilot, together with ISIS members. According to investigators, Osama K., while being armed and masked, together with others forced the pilot into a metal cage. The cage was then set on fire by one of the ISIS members, as a result of which the Jordanian pilot died. Prosecutors argued that in addition to the war crime of killing a person protected under IHL, Osama K. should also be convicted for murder with terrorist intent, as the killing was aimed to compel the Global Coalition Against Daesh to refrain from military strikes against ISIS. Osama K. has been temporarily transferred to Sweden to stand trial. On 31 July 2025 the court of first instance found him guilty of the war crime of killing a person protected under IHL as well as murder with terrorist intent and sentenced Osama K. to life imprisonment. He is due to be transferred back to France to serve his sentences there after the proceedings in Sweden became final and no later than 27 December 2025.
