Case Summary


Marcia M., a German national, travelled to Syria to join ISIS with her husband in September 2015. During her time in Syria, she joined a female ISIS battalion in Raqqa after undergoing training in shooting and producing explosives, as well as translating ISIS propaganda. Marcia M. and her husband moved into an apartment, which had been seized from its rightful owners by ISIS. She furtehr planned a terrorist attack on a music festival in Germany in the fall of 2016 and recruited fighters in order to smuggle them into Germany. The attack never took place. In October 2017, the Marcia M. was captured by Kurdish forces in Syria. She was repatriated to Germany five years later arrested upon arrival. She has been charged with war crimes of pillaging and membership in a foreign terrorist organisation. In September 2023, the court of first instance convicted her on all counts and sentenced her to eight years and six months in prison. This verdict became final after Marcia M. withdrew her appeal.
