Case Summary

Leonora M. left Germany aged 15 and travelled to Syria in 2015. In Syria, she married a German ISIS fighter with whom she had two children. Leonora M. religious classes by ISIS and took care of her and her husband’s household in Raqqa which enabled him to participate in ISIS activities. She further supported her husband by writing his letter of application for a position at ISIS “Amniyat.” Leonor M. also carried out duties for ISIS and attempted to convince other German females to come to Syria to join ISIS. In 2017, she fled to Norther Syria where she was placed in various camps until her return to Germany in December 2020. On 18 May 2022 she was found guilty of membership in a terrorist organisation and violation of weapons law and sentenced to 2 years on parole with 3 years probation. The court was, however, not convinced beyond reasonable doubt that Leonora M.’s involvement in taking care of the Yazidi women which her husband bought as a slave, constituted aiding and abetting crimes against humanity of enslavement.
