Case Summary

Jalda A., a German national, travelled to Syria through Turkey in April 2014 to join ISIS. Upon arrival, she married an ISIS fighter moving into at least three estates in Tal Abyad and Raqqa after the rightful residents to flee from ISIS. Throughout her time in Syria, Jalda A. enabled her husband to fight for ISIS by running the household and raising their son, according to ISIS ideology. After her first husband died in April 2015, Jalda A. remarried twice. While living with her third husband in Mayadin, she abused an enslaved Yazidi woman who was also regularly raped by Jalda A.’s husband. At the end of 2017, Jalda A. was captured by Kurdish forces in Syria. She was arrested upon arrival in Germany following her repatriation on 7 October 2021. A year later, she was convicted by a German court of crimes against humanity (including enslavement, torture, and rape), war crimes (including torture, rape, and pillaging), genocide, and membership in a foreign terrorist organisation. She was sentenced to 5 years and 6 months imprisonment.
