Case Summary

In 2013, the Swedish national Hassan Mostafa al-M. travelled to Syria where he was affiliated with Jabhat al-Nusra. Before returning to Sweden, he was involved in the homicide of two prisoners connected to the Syrian government. In July 2013, he returned to Sweden and was subsequently charged with murder with terrorist intent and in the alternative, war crimes of extrajudicial killings. On 14 December 2015, he was convicted of murder and sentenced to life imprisonment. Hassan Mostafa al-M. appealed the verdict, but on 30 March 2016, the Court of Appeals upheld the first instance ruling.
