Carla-Josephine S., a German national, travelled to Syria in 2015 together with her three underage children and without the consent of their father, in order to join ISIS. During her time with ISIS, she married two ISIS fighters, was part of the military unit for female fighters, was a driver for female fighters, and handed her son to a training camp for ISIS child soldiers. In 2018, Carla-Josephine S.’ son was killed during a bombing of their house. In 2019, she voluntarily returned to Germany, via Turkey and was arrested upon her return in April. One year later, a court found her guilty of membership in a foreign terrorist organisation, war crime of child recruitment, abduction of a child, and child neglect. She received a sentence of 5 years and 3 months imprisonment.
