Case Summary


Lina I., a Swedish citizen, reportedly committed genocide, crimes against humanity, and war crimes in Raqqa, Syria by allegedly detaining several Yazidi women and children buying in her home. According to the indictment, the women and children were subjected to torture or other inhuman treatment as well as persecution, including among others, being locked up in her house and forced to convert to Islam. In doing so, and in connection to an armed conflict, Lina I. is said to have acted with the intent to destroy, in whole or in part, the Yazidi ethnic group as such. On 5 February 2021, Lina I. was extradited from Turkey to Sweden and seven months later arrested on suspicions of committing war crimes in Syria. On 4 March 2022, she was convicted of war crime of child recruitment and sentenced to six years imprisonment for taking her 2-year-old son to ISIS-controlled territory in Syria in 2014. Lina I. is currently serving this sentence. She was indicted for the above mentioned additional international crimes on 19 September 2024. The trial commenced on 7 October 2024, with large parts being held in camera. On 11 February 2025, the Stockholm District Court found Lina I guilty of genocide, crimes against humanity, and war crimes. The gravity of the offenses was assessed to warrant a prison sentence of 16 years. In light of her previous sentence, the overall final term of imprisonment was determined to be 12 years.
