Asmael K., a Syrian national, allegedly joined ISIS as a fighter in Damascus in 2013. He allegedly did so by publicly taking the oath. According to investigators, Asmael K. belonged to a unit that abducted and executed opponent fighters and other unwanted people. He is said to have participated in the arrest of one of the detainees who were held ISIS detention facilities alongside the victims who were abducted by Mohammad A.’s combat unit. According to investigators, Asmael K. guarded the twelve prisoners at the execution site in mid-January 2014 and shot at least at one person. Asmael K. was arrested in Germany in late March 2023 on the suspicion of membership in a terrorist organisation and is facing an indictment accusing him of several counts of war crimes of hostage taking and one count of war crime as murder in addition to membership in a terrorist organisations.
