The defendant, an Iraqi national joined ISIS in 2014 together with Raad Riyadh A., his father. Between 2014 and 2015, Abbas R. participated in executing a captive of ISIS, while humiliating and insulting the victim. In 2015, both Abbas R. and Raad Riyadh A. arrived in Germany where they were arrested in a separate case in May 2017. Abbas R. was underage when he committed the crime and thus prosecuted pursuant to juvenile justice. On 4 June 2021, Abbas R. was found guilty of membership in a foreign terrorist organisation and war crimes. He was sentenced to 5 years and 10 months imprisonment. Abbas R. and his father both appealed their respective convictions.
